Sure, a new home is always lovely. Just think of all the decorating you get to do thanks to your interiors Pinterest boards! It’s just the idea of packing up your life and shifting it all to a new address is daunting and super time-consuming. It’s true, no one likes to move house. So, to help with any of the drama that may arise, here’s a few tips that could make the process a whole lot easier.
There’s nothing worse than last minute clean outs when packing up the home, so try and schedule in a couple of hours per week to help you get a head start. Six to eight weeks prior to the big move, select a different section of your home, and clean for an hour before or after work, two to three times a week. This will help you de-clutter and prepare yourself well in advance so you’re not losing too much sleep or wasting your weekends. It’ll also give you a real sense of clarity.
Number your boxes
The worst and most common mistake made when moving is not labelling your boxes correctly. Although we all like to think there are more good than bad people in the world, sometimes a box can ‘go missing’ when moving from one house to another. So, to avoid any heartache, instead of labelling your boxes ‘shoes’ or ‘wardrobe’ or ‘electronics’, number them and write the contents on a sheet of paper with the collating number. Sheets of paper can go missing during a move, so we suggest making a digital copy too.
Most important boxes
Following on from the above point, number what you’ll need immediately when moving into a new home. For instance, you’ll most likely need your kitchen tools like your beloved Nespresso machine or cutlery. So number the emergency essentials from 1-5 so you know you’ll survive the quick unpack when you have to rush off to work.
Prepare, prepare, prepare
Don’t leave the important things to the last minute. Removalists and cleaners should be booked in advance to avoid any delays or last-minute ‘ring arounds’… no thank you! Absolute life essentials like Foxtel, phone and internet should also be pre planned, as the switch over can take days or even weeks. And, we can’t have you missing out on your Housewives now can we!
Ask for help
We’ve all got besties and sometimes you just need to get by with a little help from your friends. If you have some muscle men around you, they’re always handy for moving furniture or taking heavy items off the walls. Also, any of your friends who are OCD when it comes to organisation, get them on board. You’ll be surprised at how much they can assist, and some even get a kick out of it!
